What kinds of therapy are available and what is the difference between them?

You can choose between lots of different kinds of talking therapy, some take longer than others eg some people might think that they need to see a therapist for years. My experience is that this is totally unnecessary and counter-productive to the client's sense of well-being and confidence. Usually 6 sessions sorts out the bulk of the problem - I work as a brief therapist. You can choose how few or how many you have.

Neither is it important to hit cushions or weep and wail dramatically -although clients do get upset, it is always in a constructive sense, letting go of the problem that has plagued them for years.

I specialise in helping people get from A to B, quickly and painlessly.

Some approaches that I might use:

Helping you to feel better about yourself or seeing that your problems have a solution.

Moving you away from the problem by focussing you on moving towards the solution.

We could call this basic Psychotherapy  -

Helping you get it off your chest - just being listened to, perhaps for the first time - it might be something you haven't told or trusted anyone else to hear before but it's been bothering for a very long time. This is part of what Counselling is about.

You might have a lot of emotions, guilt, anger, sadness, frustration, despair, fear about something that has happened, is happening or will happen in the future. We can minimise or even vaporise the effects of this using EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) You may have seen Paul McKenna using this with people on TV to help them tap away their phobias etc. sometimes it only takes a few minutes to completely eliminate very serious and intractable problems that have plagued people for years.

Part of the problem of having problems is that we get so very stressed about having them and not being able to get rid of them. Wouldn't it be great to be able to learn to completely relax, mind and body, and be much more positive about life in general? Wouldn't it be great to be able to switch off from the problem and be able to give yourself a really inspiring affirmation, like today is going to be a great day and actually believe it in the trillions of cells that you are made up of. That's hypnotherapy   - and you can also go back to points in your life when some bad things happened and get rid of the bad feelings attached to them eg if you fell off your bike when you were five, and there was nobody to help you, you might find that as an adult you burst into tears or into a temper tantrum when nobody helps ; rather than simply thinking I can sort it out myself or perhaps everyone else is busy right now. We can use this regression technique to get rid of major stuff like PTSD (Post traumatic stress disorder) and help with OCD (Obsessive compulsive Disorder), Bulimia, fear of anything, jealousy etc.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) - this is about how you program yourself. Do you react badly when you encounter spiders, men with beards, particular accents, a certain smell or a particular song? Chances are that you have stored it in your brain in a particular way that isn't helpful -wouldn't it be great if you could it shrink it down to size so that it's effect was negligible  or even non-existent?

CBT  - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - this type of therapy is much favoured by the NHS - the idea is to make the client aware of how they feel in a particular situation and take control. By breaking the problem down into manageable steps the client can start to make progress away from the problem and towards the solution. It can include relaxation therapy.

Transactional Analysis (TA) - by looking at the relationships you have with people around you and the relationships you had in your family when you were growing up, you can improve the way you deal with people at work, school etc. Very useful for anyone who has been bullied or has feelings of poor self-esteem.
